The United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has updated its travel guidance for five popular European tourist destinations, issuing specific warnings as the continent braces for a severe wildfire season. The advisories, which cover Spain, Portugal, Greece, France, and Italy, come amid soaring temperatures and prolonged drought conditions that have heightened the risk of fast-spreading blazes.
For holidaymakers, the FCDO is now explicitly urging caution regarding “extreme heat” and “high wildfire risk” in these countries. Travellers are being advised to monitor local weather reports, follow instructions from local authorities, and be aware that fire conditions can change with little warning. The advisory notes that several regions, particularly in southern France and the Greek islands, have already imposed temporary restrictions on outdoor barbecues and camping to prevent accidental ignitions.
