Antioquia Reporters Face Fresh Threats From Notorious Cartel

In a chilling escalation of violence against the press, four local journalists in the Antioquia region have been placed in the crosshairs of Colombia’s most powerful narcotics syndicate. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) confirmed on Tuesday that the reporters—whose regular coverage of crime and politics has put them in the line of fire—received direct, menacing warnings attributed to the Clan del Golfo.

According to the CPJ, the threats were relayed through a combination of social media messages and physical notices left near the journalists’ homes and workplaces. The intimidating correspondence specifically accused the reporters of “favoring rival factions” in their dispatches, a clear attempt to silence independent reporting ahead of upcoming local elections. The group, known formally as the Gaitanista Self-Defense Forces, is widely regarded as the nation’s largest drug-trafficking operation, with a heavy presence in the Urabá and Bajo Cauca subregions of our state.

One of the threatened journalists, speaking on condition of anonymity for safety, told this outlet that the threats were “unlike previous intimidation attempts.” The source added, “They know our routes, our families, and our sources. They are telling us to stop publishing or face the consequences.” The CPJ has urgently called on the national government’s National Protection Unit to provide immediate security assessments and bulletproof vests, as well as relocation assistance for the affected reporters and their families.

This incident marks yet another grim chapter for press freedom in Antioquia, where at least three journalists have been killed in the last decade for covering drug-related corruption. Local press freedom advocates are now demanding a more aggressive state response, arguing that the current protection protocols are failing those who risk their lives to keep our communities informed. As the cartel tightens its grip on rural corridors, the question remains whether any shield can truly protect the truth-tellers in our midst.
