Mumbai’s NSCI Grounded: BMC Slaps 30-Day Ban on Commercial Events Over Leakage Violations
In a decisive administrative crackdown, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has directed the prominent National Sports Club of India (NSCI) in Mumbai to immediately cease hosting all commercial events for a period of one month. The stringent order, issued on Thursday, stems from allegations that the club has been flagrantly violating environmental norms by illegally tapping into the city’s public water supply network.
Civic officials confirmed that the action follows a detailed inspection that uncovered an unauthorized connection drawing water directly from a municipal line. Beyond the illegal extraction, the BMC raised serious concerns about significant water leakage on the premises, which they argue contravenes the Maharashtra Municipal Corporations Act. The club has also been accused of failing to submit mandatory compliance reports regarding its water usage and sewage discharge, exacerbating the civic body’s frustration.
The 30-day suspension specifically targets all commercial activities, including high-profile banquets, corporate gatherings, and ticketed sporting fixtures, dealing a severe blow to the club’s revenue generation. However, the BMC has clarified that regular sporting activities for club members will be permitted to continue, as long as they do not involve commercial exploitation. An official from the BMC’s water supply department stated that the directive is a stern warning to other commercial establishments in the city. “No entity, regardless of its stature, is above the law when it comes to our precious water resources,” the official remarked. “The NSCI must rectify the leakages and legalize its water connections immediately.”
The NSCI, a historic hub for Mumbai’s elite sports and social circuit, now faces a race against time to address the civic body’s grievances.
