Drones Rain Down on Ukraine and Russia as Kyiv Confirms Command Shake-Up

In a marked escalation of hostilities, Russia and Ukraine launched significant overnight drone attacks against each other’s territories, even as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced a major change in the country’s top military leadership. Defence officials in Kyiv confirmed that a new commander has been appointed to lead the country’s armed forces, a move observers say is aimed at revitalising war strategy after months of grinding front-line stalemates.

Moscow’s defence ministry claimed its air defence systems successfully intercepted and destroyed dozens of Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles across multiple regions, including areas near the border and over the Black Sea. Social media posts from residents in southern Russia reported hearing loud explosions in the night sky, with local authorities urging calm as emergency crews assessed debris fall.

Ukraine, for its part, reported that its air force had shot down scores of Russian drones and missiles targeting critical infrastructure. The Ukrainian General Staff stated that the incoming drone waves were part of a “systematic” Russian campaign to disrupt energy grids and demoralise civilians as winter takes hold. Emergency blackouts were imposed in several regions to stabilise the power system.

The fresh aerial barrage came hours after President Zelenskyy signed a decree to replace General Valerii Zaluzhnyi, who had been praised for his leadership during the initial invasion but whose relationship with the political leadership had reportedly become strained. His successor, Colonel General Oleksandr Syrskyi, is known for orchestrating the successful Kharkiv counteroffensive last year.

While Zelenskyy insisted the change was “about strengthening the army and improving command efficiency,” analysts warn that the reshuffle carries high risks. The new commander faces immediate pressure to adapt battlefield tactics and hold the line against renewed Russian offensives in the east and south. Meanwhile, ordinary Ukrainians brace for more sleepless nights as the drone warfare shows no sign of abating.
